CityBuddies

Description

Starting university is an exciting and enjoyable time. However it can also be worrying for new students, which is where CityBuddies comes in. A CityBuddy is a second or third year undergraduate, studying your course, who will mentor you in your first term. They are there to guide you around the University, show all City has to offer and provide a valuable insight into studying on your course.

If there are spaces on your course, you will be matched with a Mentor. Otherwise, you’ll be placed on our waiting list and matched up later if a space becomes available.

CityBuddy Mentors will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Benefits to getting involved
  • Take pride in the fact that you have made someone's transition to university considerably less stressful
  • Meet new people on your course
  • Give something back to the university
  • Demonstrate enhanced active-listening skills

After CityBuddies you'll be given help and guidance on how to best present what you've gained when talking with employers.

When does it take place?

Every year from September - January.

You are expected to make initial contact with your buddy before they arrive at Uni and then to be available to answer questions or meet up when they arrive.

The number of meetings depends on the new student’s needs, but you are able to set expectations around your availability.

Where does it take place?

On campus.

Who can apply?

All undergraduate students who will continue studying in September (usually first and second year students but in some cases third year students on four year courses) can apply to become a CityBuddy. You don't need any previous experience or particular skills as training will be given. Most importantly it is the experience and knowledge that you've gained as a student that you share.

Students from all undergraduate courses are eligible to become CityBuddies.

Applying to become a CityBuddy mentor is easy:

  1. Complete our online application form.
  2. Your application will be assessed and if successful you will invited to an assessment centre in March.
  3. If you pass the assessment centre you will be invited to a compulsory training session in April.
  4. After attending training, you will be confirmed as a CityBuddy and matched with new students in August/September
